Claiborne Food Ministry: One Tuesday and Thursday at a Time

Tucked into a red brick building on Cherry Street in New Tazewell, Tennessee, Claiborne Food Ministry doesn't look like much from the outside. But twice a week those doors swing open, and a steady stream of neighbors — some pulling up in minivans, some walking over from down the block — find exactly what they came for: groceries, dignity, and a friendly face.

We got to visit and see the whole thing in action, and what struck us most was how much gets done with so little fanfare.

A Team That Shows Up

Claiborne Food Ministry runs on volunteers, plain and simple. The day we visited, a small crew in matching teal shirts moved through the building with that easy, unspoken rhythm you only get from doing something together week after week after week.

There's no glamour in stocking shelves or breaking down boxes. But there's something wonderful in it — the same good people, showing up, because someone has to and they decided it may as well be them.

Behind the scenes, a small office team keeps the whole operation humming: coordinating deliveries, managing paperwork, and making sure those shelves stay full between distribution days.

More Storage Than You'd Ever Guess

Step past the "Volunteers Only" door and — surprise! — there's a whole warehouse back there doing the heavy lifting. Pallets of canned goods, crates of produce, boxes labeled for specific needs, all staged and ready to move.

It's not fancy. But it's organized, and it's full. Working in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, the ministry is able to offer staples, canned and boxed goods, and — when they can get it — fresh meat and produce.

Open Tuesdays and Thursdays

The pantry opens Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., with food donations accepted those same mornings from 7:30 to 11:00. It's a tight window — but it's consistent, and for families in Claiborne County who count on it, consistency is everything.

Claiborne Food Ministry is a 501(c)(3), and like so many of the wonderful small ministries we've met on this journey, it runs almost entirely on the generosity of donors and the willingness of volunteers to keep showing up.
